(+) Maria João Pires

Maria João Pires’ 1985 recording of Schumann’s “Kinderszenen” for Erato (Warner) was and is by far the best I have ever heard. I also enjoyed all of her Mozart piano sonatas, which are also included in this box. Plus, she knows her Chopin. Altogether, in my eyes, one of the most worthwhile boxed sets around at the moment.

I can’t think of a pianist with a more ideal command of Chopin’s style. Pires trips through the roulades with filigree dexterity, but her tone is so thoughtful, serious and weighty that they arrive with immense emotional profundity.” [The Times, London, June 2007]
