Irony and Satire

It never ceases to amaze me that a large part of the population is simply unable to understand satire or irony.

The Internet is filled to the brim with comments by people who are angered, infuriated or seriously offended by things that clearly were not meant to have that effect.

I have the feeling that those who are unable to grasp such texts are either not accustomed to reading all that much any more and/or the Internet has lead to a serious decline in the degree of patience afforded to a text. People read a few isolated lines and then rush to the comments section to spew forth their ignorance and/or hatred.

Very often that makes for a sad read.
