Note: This is the first of many posts that will (quickly) introduce you to anywhere between 10 and 1000 favorite tunes of mine, brief anecdotes included. You’ll probably know all of the tunes … but none of the anecdotes.
I have no idea why I picked this tune to kick things off, probably because I’ve been wearing the Gaucho album thin today.
Most Steely Dan fans, I think, hated this album like the plague, but it’s my favorite one, bar none of their other releases. There isn’t a weak tune on the album, not a single one. At a time when I was still listening to hard rock and heavy metal almost exclusively, with a few other albums here and there, this release popped up on my radar when I wanted to buy a birthday present for a beautiful, wonderful and extremely sexy Yugoslavian lady. At my local record store, a guy I trusted recommended this for “[…] beautiful, wonderful and extremely sexy Yugoslavian ladies […]” and within two listens, I decided that I should have kept it for myself. So, I bought another copy the next day.
Donald Fagen would have had a field day with this anecdote. Probably not in a good way.
This album has so many perfectly executed, sublimely swinging and laid-back funky tunes that it is almost ludicrous, Perhaps, “Hey Nineteen” isn’t my favorite track anymore (I’m not sure), but it was what attracted me to the album way back when. I think I have played the album several thousand times … and I’m still going strong. It is, once again, running while I am typing this.
And, the “beautiful, wonderful and extremely sexy Yugoslavian lady” liked it.

Make tonight a wonderful thing“
